Updated April 2026

Seattle is the cradle of legal recreational cannabis in the United States. When Washington passed Initiative 502 in 2012, the Emerald City became one of the first major American metros to roll out adult-use retail — and more than a decade later, Seattle's dispensary scene has matured into one of the most refined, neighborhood-driven cannabis markets in the country. From the tightly curated boutique shops of Ballard and Capitol Hill to the high-volume value leaders along Aurora Avenue and in Burien, Seattle offers something for every kind of consumer.

How We Ranked These Dispensaries

Our ranking methodology blends multiple data points to surface the shops that consistently deliver the best customer experience across Seattle's many neighborhoods:

  • Verified customer ratings — We analyze star ratings from verified buyers, weighting shops that have earned trust over time.
  • Review volume — A 4.9-star rating across 700+ reviews is a stronger signal than a 5.0 from a handful, so volume matters in our scoring.
  • Neighborhood reach — Seattle is a city of distinct neighborhoods, so we made sure to include strong picks from across the metro: Burien, Greenwood, Shoreline, Ballard, Fremont, SODO, West Seattle, Capitol Hill, and the Rainier Valley.
  • Product selection and services — Shops that stock a deep range of flower, concentrates, edibles, vapes, topicals, and pre-rolls score higher than those with thin shelves.
  • Location, hours, and accessibility — Convenient hours, parking, and proximity to transit (Sound Transit Link, King County Metro) make a real difference in a city this dense.

Every name, rating, review count, and address below was pulled directly from verified Washington listings in the Budpedia dispensary directory. We did not fabricate any of this data — it reflects what real Seattle-area customers have said about real shops.

Tips for Visiting Dispensaries in Seattle

Seattle's dispensary scene runs on a few rules that every visitor — and even some long-time locals — should keep in mind before walking through the door.

Bring a valid government-issued ID. Washington requires every customer to be 21 or older for recreational purchases. Driver's licenses, state IDs, US passports, and US passport cards are accepted. Out-of-state IDs are fine. Expired IDs are not, and shops will turn you away — even if you are clearly an adult — if your ID is expired or damaged.

Cash is still king (but ATMs are everywhere). Because cannabis remains federally illegal, most Seattle dispensaries operate on a cash-only basis or use cashless ATM systems that charge a small convenience fee. Plan to bring cash, or expect to use the in-store ATM. A handful of shops accept debit, but credit cards are essentially nonexistent in Washington cannabis retail.

Know the daily purchase limits. Washington state law caps adult-use purchases at 1 ounce of usable cannabis flower, 16 ounces of solid edibles, 72 ounces of liquid edibles, or 7 grams of concentrate per transaction. Budtenders track these limits at the register, so you cannot exceed them by visiting multiple shops on the same trip.

Public consumption is illegal. This catches a lot of tourists off guard. Even though cannabis is legal to buy and possess in Seattle, it is still illegal to consume in public — including parks, beaches, sidewalks, the waterfront, and any business property. Washington has very few licensed consumption lounges, so consume only in a private residence or on private property where the owner has given permission. Hotels in Seattle are almost universally non-smoking, including for cannabis.

Sales tax matters. Washington adds a 37% cannabis excise tax on top of regular state sales tax (6.5%) and local Seattle taxes — so the price on the menu is not the price you pay at the register. Budget accordingly.

Shop early to avoid lines. Most Seattle dispensaries open between 8:00 and 9:00 AM and close between 10:00 and 11:00 PM. The busiest hours are 5:00 to 8:00 PM weekdays and Saturday afternoons. If you want personal attention from a budtender, visit on a weekday before noon.

Tip your budtender. It is customary in Washington to tip budtenders, especially when they spend extra time helping you choose products. A few dollars per visit, or 10–15% on a larger order, is appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cannabis legal in Seattle?

Yes. Recreational cannabis has been legal in Washington state since December 2012 (Initiative 502), and Seattle has a fully licensed retail market. Adults 21 and over can purchase, possess, and consume cannabis in private. Medical cannabis was legalized earlier in Washington and was integrated into the recreational system in 2016. You do not need a medical card to shop in Seattle.

What do I need to buy cannabis in Seattle?

You need a valid, unexpired, government-issued ID showing you are 21 or older. A driver's license, state ID, US passport, US passport card, or military ID are all accepted. Out-of-state and international IDs are fine as long as they are not expired. You also need cash (or a debit card at some shops) since most Seattle dispensaries cannot process credit cards.

Where can I legally consume cannabis in Seattle?

On private property, with the owner's permission. That means your own home, an Airbnb that explicitly allows cannabis (most do not), or a friend's place. Public consumption — parks, sidewalks, beaches, waterfront piers, the Pike Place Market area, hotels, restaurants, bars — is illegal and can result in a fine. Washington has yet to license many consumption lounges, so the safest option is always a private residence.

What are the best Seattle neighborhoods for dispensaries?

Seattle's dispensary scene is genuinely neighborhood-driven, and the strongest shopping areas tend to be Burien (high-volume value leaders like Kush21 and The Joint), Greenwood and Phinney Ridge (Have a Heart, Greenworks), the Rainier Valley (A Greener Today, The Green Door, Seattle Cannabis Co), SODO and Georgetown (Dockside, The Bakeree), and Ballard / Fremont (Hashtag, American Mary). Capitol Hill and the Aurora Avenue corridor also have strong options.

Can tourists buy cannabis in Seattle?

Yes, absolutely. Seattle dispensaries serve tourists every day, and any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID can make a purchase regardless of state or country of origin. The catch is that cannabis cannot be transported across state lines or onto airplanes — even to other legal states — so anything you buy must be consumed in Washington.

How much does cannabis cost in Seattle?

Washington has one of the more competitively priced legal markets in the country thanks to mature supply. As of 2026, an eighth of flower typically runs $20–45 before tax depending on quality tier, while pre-rolls start at around $5–10 and edibles start at $10–25 per package. Concentrates range from $20 for a budget gram to $60+ for live rosin and other premium extracts. Remember the 37% excise tax stacks on top of regular sales tax.

Are deliveries available in Seattle?

No. Unlike California, Washington does not currently allow recreational cannabis delivery to consumers. Every purchase must be made in person at a licensed retail location.
